Netflix had a surprise hit on its hands when it dropped the Korean TV show Squid Game in 2021, spawning a now iconic franchise that is about to have its second season premiere. Ahead of its sophomore season, Netflix has partnered with various brands to help promote the show through apparel and footwear collabs, the latter taking place with Crocs and Puma. While we already saw the Squid Game-themed Puma Palermo, two more sneakers have joined the fray with the Puma Suede and Puma Easy Rider.
Both pairs in the collection are packed with easter eggs and references to the show. Starting with the Easy Rider, the leather and suede silhouette comes with a green and red color palette that represents the tracksuits worn by the contestants in the games. Young-hee, the giant robot doll that spots players' movements in the game “Red Light, Green Light,” is added to the sneaker via a hang tag, depicting her wearing the Easy Riders. Co-branded details on the tongue and insole and the custom graphic on the insole depicting the doll complete the nods to the series.
Moving on to the Puma Suede, the multi-color patchwork design features varying materials, including blue nubuck and suede along the toe, tongue, and heel. Patches of fuzzy pink suede hit the midfoot, surrounded by darker pink hues on the formstrip and a burst of yellow along the suede collar. Inspiration for this design comes from the staircase scene from episode 5, a trippy homage to the M.C. Escher lithograph print from the ‘50s. Finishing the design is the white midsole and yellow rubber outsole.
The Squid Game x Puma Collection will release on December 12, 2024, through Puma and select retailers online and in-store. Available in men’s sizing, the retail price has yet to be announced.
