Trae Young, the superstar Atlanta Hawks guard who had been an adidas athlete since 2018, shocked the world when he began to wear sneakers from rival brands like ANTA and Jordan leading up to the start of the 2024-2025 NBA season. While there were plans to launch his fourth signature sneaker with adidas, the Trae Young 4, his contract with The Three Stripes ended, causing the silhouette to be canned and Young to become a sneaker free agent. Now, Jordan Brand has announced that it has signed the 26-year-old star to a deal.
Specifics about the signing have yet to be made public, including whether or not Trae would be in line to get a signature sneaker with Jumpman. His model with adidas, the adidas Trae Young, was not very successful, according to sources who spoke with Sole Retriever. Alongside struggling sales, internal documents and catalogs for basketball products did not mention Trae Young past the Fall/Winter 2024 season.
This isn’t the first time an adidas athlete has jumped ship for a Nike brand, as notably Kobe Bryant left The Three Stripes in the early 2000s after a handful of signature sneakers and eventually created one of the most iconic signature sneaker lines of all time with the Nike Kobe franchise.
As for Trae Young, expect the Hawks’ star player to continue to take the floor in Jordan Brand products, something he has been consistently doing over the last few weeks, as he is now officially under the Jumpman umbrella. Current Jordan Brand athletes with signature sneakers include Jayson Tatum, Zion Williamson, and Luka Doncic. At the same time, rising stars like Paolo Banchero are rumored to be next in line for their models. Beyond these marquee names, the label hosts a deep roster of NBA talent, including Rui Hachimura and Bam Adebayo.
