Ken Griffey Jr. is still one of the only baseball players whose signature sneakers translated off the diamond. His Nike sneakers are fan favorites even decades removed from his playing days. Specifically, his first sneaker, the Air Griffey Max 1, has enjoyed a handful of retro releases in the 2020s. Next up for the sneaker is a retro of the original Royal colorway.
First released in 1996 as one of the original three colorways of Griffey’s sneaker, the pair was last seen in 2021 and will return in identical form to its last retro in celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the silhouette. This means expect to see the same royal blue suede paneling paired with white leather, black accents, and pops of volt green. Griffey branding stands alongside various nods to Nike, as his number is applied to the end of the lockdown strap.

Alongside this retro, Nike has plans to bring back another original colorway of the sneaker, the Emerald edition, during the Holiday 2025 season. This may be the start of another retro run for the sneaker, considering 2026 marks the 30th birthday of the model.
The Nike Air Max Griffey Max 1 Royal will return in Spring 2026 through Nike and select retailers online and in-store. Available in men’s and GS sizing, the retail price is $170 and $140.
