While most of Nike’s performance running footwear operates yearly, introducing new upgrades each calendar year, the Vaporfly series has stuck to a 2-year lifecycle. The elite runner is due for an update in 2025, with images of multiple colorways of the Vaporfly 4 making their way online over the last few months, including the White Obsidian Mist rendition. Now, official photos of a colorway Nike favors for its performance runners have appeared.
The Proto (prototype) color scheme is applied to the Vaporfly 4, a color palette on multiple Nike running silhouettes, including the Alphafly 3 in 2024. A sail-shaded engineered mesh hits the base layer of the sneaker, accented by a black Swoosh painted on the midfoot. Throughout the rest of the upper, we continue to see a sail finish, though there are metallic silver and black pops along the tongue and heel tab thanks to branding features.

No Proto colorway is complete without pops of safety orange, originally one of Nike's defining colors. The Swoosh reserves the shade for the perforated insole and the foam midsole with a stacked ZoomX cushioning setup. Integrated into the center of the plush foam is a carbon fiber Flyplate for extra energy return. Final details include the “handwritten” code appearing on the lateral heel and a black rubber outsole.
The Nike Vaporfly 4 Proto Sail Black will release in March 14, 2025, through Nike and select retailers online and in-store. Available in men’s and women’s sizing, the retail price is $260.
