New Balance’s “Protection Pack” (officially called the Refined Future Pack by the brand) has become a staple in the Boston-based labels lineup. While initially starting on the 2002R, the look has taken over the New Balance 1906R, titled the 1906D under this Protection Pack banner, in various color schemes. Following an official look at the “Triple White” colorway, its opposite has emerged in “Triple Black.”
As conceptualized by New Balance footwear designer Yue Wu, the mastermind behind the pack's original design, this iteration of the 1906R Protection Pack features the "wearable relic" aesthetic of its predecessors. Its black mesh base layer is adorned with a combination of leather and suede overlays, bringing a sense of tactile contrast to the design. These overlays bear a pre-distressed, worn-in look that nods to the “wearable relic” theme. The "N" logo at midfoot is integrated into the "NLOCK" lacing system, also in black. The toe and midfoot overlays carry through the aesthetic, complementing an all-black heel counter. Branding details in white — 1906D on the heel and New Balance on the tongue— offer subtle highlights, while a black foam midsole marked with red NERGY branding and a black outsole completes the design.
The New Balance 1906D Protection Pack Triple Black will release August 2, 2023 through New Balance and select retailers online and in-store. Coming in men’s sizing, the retail price is set at $170.
