Penny Hardaway’s legendary NBA career helped birth one of the most beloved sneaker lines of the '90s, the Nike Air Max Penny. After seeing a revival courtesy of Social Status, general release colorways have been hitting shelves left and right. Now, Nike is paying homage to Hardaway’s roots with the forthcoming release of the Nike Air Max Penny 1 Lester Middle School.
The colorway is a tribute to the institution where Penny's basketball journey began, Lester Middle School in Memphis. Later on in life, Hardaway would return to his alma mater as coach. The sneaker features a clean black, white, and yellow combo across a primarily nubuck upper. Black nubuck contrasts the white hits seen on the foam portions of the upper, piping for the midfoot overlay, and two-tone black and white tongue. Yellow hits appear on branding details including the vamp window, tongue Swoosh, and tiger print jewel Swoosh at midfoot. We also see the sockliner come in this same vibrant yellow hue. Rounding out the design is a white and black foam midsole with exposed Air in the heel paired with a black, yellow, and white outsole.
The Nike Air Max Penny 1 Lester Middle School will release August 8 through Nike and select retailers online and in-store. Coming in men’s sizing, the retail price is set at $180.
