Few partnerships have struck a chord quite like Off-White and Nike. Founded by the late Virgil Abloh, Off-White rapidly became synonymous with the reinvention of sneaker design and became a prominent force in high fashion. Virgil left plenty of designs for the world before passing in 2021, as seen with the multiple releases of Off-White x Nike sneakers and last year's Art Basel exhibit. Abloh's legacy continues on the AF1 Mid with the newest Off-White x Nike Air Force 1 Mid appearing in “Varsity Maize.”
This striking new rendition of the AF1 Mid by Off-White embraces a two-tone color scheme of white and varsity maize. Echoing the same construction as the "Pine Green" variant, the “Varsity Maize” pair features an all-over leather finish. Yellow hues delicately wrap around the mudguard, eyestays, collar, lockdown strap, and heel, setting a bold contrast to the pristine white that graces the toebox and midfoot. The design introduces an additional lace set that encircles the upper in white, setting off the standard yellow lace set running along the tongue.
The iconic Off-White branding, displayed in Helvetica font, stands out on the medial midfoot. At the same time, an embroidered grim reaper logo adorns the lateral side, adding an unexpected touch to the design. The midfoot Swoosh proudly bears extra stitching details, and the instantly recognizable Off-White zip-tie is harmoniously integrated with a tonal yellow shade. Underfoot, the sneaker is rounded off with a reworked AF1 sole unit. The heel section of the sole is distinguished by its wavy finish and an exposed Air unit, culminating in a partially spiked yellow rubber outsole.
The Off-White x Nike Air Force 1 Mid Varsity Maize will release November 9, 2023, through Off-White, Nike SNKRS, and select retailers online and in-store.
