After the success of the LeBron 7 and LeBron 8, Nike continued to have Jason Petrie as the leading designer for the LeBron 9 (IX), which was originally released in 2011. Notable improvements include the use of Hyperfuse and Flywire technology on the upper as well a redesigned cushioning setup with forefoot Zoom Air and a Max Air 180 unit in the heel. Launched in 2011, the LeBron 9 signified another evolution in LeBron's signature series. It was the first basketball shoe to combine Flywire technology and Hyperfuse construction - a move that set a new benchmark for performance footwear. Jason Petrie, the lead designer, aimed to create a shoe that would provide optimal support, breathability, and durability for LeBron's forceful, high-speed gameplay.
The LeBron 9 also incorporated a Max Air 180 unit for impact protection and a Zoom Air unit for reasponsive cushioning. Additionally, the shoe featured a unique wing-like design on the heel for extra support, along with a herringbone pattern on the outsole for enhanced traction. Off-court appeal wasn't overlooked, with the shoe boasting sleek lines and dynamic colorways.
Among the noteworthy LeBron 9 releases were the 'Miami Nights' colorway, with its dark-based upper, highlighted by hints of pink and purple, and the 'Big Bang' edition, carrying forward the NASA-inspired 'Galaxy' theme. Also iconic was the 'LeBronold Palmer' edition, a player-exclusive release that paid tribute to legendary golfer Arnold Palmer's famous Iced Tea, LeBron's favorite drink.
